The tourist-hub of Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront, is home to perhaps the biggest concentration of places to eat in the city. Absolutely packed in summer season, the visitors to the harbour center have more dining options than the eye can see. Once you’ve tussled your way through the masses of camera-carrying foreign visitors from December to March, you will see the challenge that some restaurants face in having to deliver consistently great food and service by being fully booked from morning till midnight, seven days a week.
On absolute prime location, overlooking the harbour and Table Mountain, is Mondiall, the contemporary restaurant that replaced classic Jazz establishment the Green Dolphin two years ago. Based in a huge high-ceiling venue with glass walls, Mondiall has the style of a modern Tom Ford suit, and offers a menu with both contemporary meat & fish classics as well as Tapas. On the side, Mondiall hosts a (Wagyu) burger take-out for those looking for a quick bite.
The first time I visited Mondiall, I had a fantastic Seafood Risotto. On my second visit, I was served a steak that topped any other I’d had in the city, which I know is an incredibly bold statement to make in a city like Cape Town. However, during the experiences of comparison with many great steak restaurants in the city, I found myself coming back to Mondiall.
Perhaps my loving relationship with the 21 Day Matured Fillet Beefsteak is something uniquely personal, and I haven’t dared to cheat and order something different from the menu since. The fact that it’s accompanied by crispy truffle scented fries with smoked chipotle mayonnaise makes the decision even easier. These days, I don’t even look at the menu anymore.
One day I hope to be able to save some space for the Macademia & Salted Caramel Cheesecake for dessert, which is getting quite the reputation among my sweet-toothed foodie friends. Until then, my dinner dates will be solely shared with the Fillet, which is totally fine by me.
