Odyssey cape town

Review: Odyssey Gastropub

One of the only gastropubs in the city, Odyssey, provides casual drinks on bar stools, small plates to nibble on as well as wholesome meals at nice looking dining tables. The Bree Street pub not only named itself after an eventful journey, but also understands you can serve fine food in a bar without having a Liverpool fan headbutting you in the face.

I love myself a good craft beer and a burger at times, but also uphold a more sophisticated standard. Odyssey combines exactly what you expect from such needs, as the two story pub in Bree Street serves more refined comfort food combined with a warm and vibey atmosphere. When I went with a friend, we first had an informal beer downstairs at the bar, before settling ourselves at a nice dining table upstairs at the window, overlooking Bree Street.

To start, we shared a plate of Odyssey Sliders, a selection of mini burgers to enjoy with our craft beers. All of them were packed with a variety of great flavours and paired nicely with our beverages. For mains she had the Orange Chicken Supreme with butternut risotto, and I decided on the Fish & Chips, a beer battered Hake with tartar sauce and hand cut fries. The ambiance was lively and modern, the food fresh, soothing and fulfilling, perfect for an evening of easy comfort. The staff were very kind, and the managers seem to know exactly how to make their diners feel special.

Odyssey also provides a great venue for small parties, as both upstairs and downstairs provide space for private occasions next to the bar. I hear it’s one of the most sought after venues to organize a casual birthday party.

Having said that, I think Odyssey provides that great opportunity for those who enjoy the casual and comfort of a bar, but prefer to enjoy it in style.

4/5 on a scale of casual weekday dinners
