Hartenberg Wine Estate Picnic

Review: Picnic at Hartenberg (CTFoodChallenge)

Our new Food Challenge for March, in partnership with InstaEats and ILoveFoodies, is finding the best picnic spots in Cape Town and surrounds. We ran another poll among our audience, and thanks to your votes came across a variety of places to try for the next few weeks. Excitement all over, as we are about to be very spoiled yet again!

The first contestant was Hartenberg Wine Estate, situated close to Stellenbosch in the beautiful Cape Winelands. The wine estate has two beautiful settings for a picnic, one being table seated next to the main restaurant, the other being traditionally set in a romantic field next to the vineyards. Hartenberg also uses this setting to host occasional outdoor live music performances, so you can fully experience a lovely day out in the weekends.

They offer a beautiful basket (made out of an old wine crate) with a variety of home made foods and a bottle of wine for a very reasonable price, especially considering the amount of food it contains. We were given the full treatment, including home made breads, snoek pate, stuffed pork, chicken and feta panko-crumbed snacks, cold meats, cheeses, homemade mustard (with their own wine vinegar!), onion spread, fruits, quinoa salad and salted caramel chocolate treats for dessert. It’s a delightful array of food, so I’d recommend arriving with an empty stomach.

For me the homemade breads really stood out, and the stuffed pork was delicious. You can see Hartenberg really puts plentiful effort in making their picnic basket something special, considering most of the produce is freshly made on-site. They have some fantastic wines on offer, especially their Chardonnays, and available Alchemy range alongside their award-winning Shiraz.

After our meal, we had a little tour through the cellars, which are definitely worth the visit as well. In terms of hosting, the Hartenberg staff are absolutely superb, showing such invested interest in their clients and making them feel completely welcome. To extend our experience, we took a few bottles of wine home to try. All in all, their picnic is an absolutely fantastic experience (perhaps one of the best I’ve ever had), and I actually can not wait to return.

Hartenberg definitely set the bar high for this month’s picnic challenge. Who will we visit next? Stay tuned to our social media channels for our next spot. You can find us here:
